The small dimensions of this flashlight shouldn’t fool you. Powered by one CR123A battery, the limited edition Olight S Mini Baton combines a compact size with a powerful output. A side switch controls four levels of brightness plus a strobe mode. Compared to the original S1 Baton, the light has a 10 % shorter length and a 10 % increased maximum output. It covers a range from 0.5 to 550 lumens.
The S Mini Baton offers a beautiful neutral white output from a Cree XM-L2 LED, has a maximum beam distance of 110 meters, and meets IPX8 water-resistance rating. One CR123A non-rechargeable battery is included with the light. If you are intending to use rechargeable batteries, I would highly recommend Olight’s universal magnetic USB charger.
The flashlight features Olight’s proven user interface. From an off position, a short press turns the light on in the memorized mode. A long press activates the moonlight mode, a fast double press activates the high mode, and a triple press puts the light in strobe mode. The flashlight also comes with a lockout mode to prevent accidental activation. To access the lockout mode, press and hold the switch for about two seconds. The flashlight will enter the moonlight mode first and then switch off. To exit the lockout mode, press and hold the button for about a second which will turn the flashlight on in moonlight mode.
While on, press and hold the switch to cycle through the modes low, medium and high. A single press turns the light off. A double click gives instant access to the high mode, the strobe function is activated by a quick triple press. There are two automatic shut-off timer settings: When the flashlight is on, double click and hold the switch to access the timer. A single blink indicates the 3 minutes mode while two blinks indicates the 9 minutes mode. After the timer is set, double click and hold the button to switch between the two timer modes.
On high, the light produces its maximum brightness of 550 lumens steadily for 90 seconds before slowly ramping down to 300 lumens for the next two hours. This is a necessary heat management feature, ensuring the longevity of the LED. And 300 lumens is still a bright output for such a small light. Another useful feature is that the light gradually fades in when you turn it on so that your eyes are not strained during brightness changes.
The clip sits in a machined recess which prevents it from rotating. Since the flashlight is machined from raw brass it will naturally pick up a patina with time and use.
The S Mini Baton suits my needs perfectly. The compact size allows it to easily fit in my bag or pocket. The different light modes are sufficient for various applications. All in all, it’s a great EDC flashlight.
